The Legend of Sage Yadarishi
In the Treta Yuga, a sage named Yadarishi — son of the great sage Rishyasrunga and Santa Devi — performed intense penance inside a cave on this hillock, blessed by Anjaneya (Hanuman). The hill is situated between Bhongir (Bhuvanagiri) and Raigiri in present-day Nalgonda district, Telangana.
Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Lord Narasimha appeared before the sage in five divine forms:
- Sri Jwala Narasimha
- Sri Yogananda Narasimha
- Sri Gandabherunda Narasimha
- Sri Ugra Narasimha

These five manifestations are collectively worshipped as the Pancha Narasimha Kshetram, making Yadadri one of the most unique Narasimha temples in India. The origin of this sacred shrine finds mention in the Skanda Purana, one of the eighteen Mahapuranas.
The Sacred Sudarshana Chakra
Glowing brilliantly atop the Sikharam of the Garbha Griha (Sanctum Sanctorum) is the golden Sudarshana Chakra (approximately 3 ft × 3 ft) of Lord Vishnu. This sacred adornment and divine weapon is visible from as far as 6 kilometres away. Legend has it that the Chakra once moved like a compass, guiding devotees towards the temple. It is believed to possess mystic powers and, at times, rotates on its own — no human hand can turn it.
The Tribal Legend
After Yadarishi attained Moksha, tribal communities discovered the Lord’s presence and began worshipping at the temple. However, due to improper worship practices, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha withdrew into the hills. After years of searching, the Lord appeared in the dream of a devout tribal woman, revealing Himself in a large cavern as five majestic avatars — restoring the sacred Pancha Narasimha Kshetram for all devotees.

- 1148 AD: An ancient inscription at the Kolanupaka Jagaddevuni Narayana Swamy Temple records that King Tribhuvana Malludu, after his victory in Telangana, established a fort on the Ekashila Hillock at Bhongir and visited Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy several times.
