Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is one of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, and holds the distinction of being the second among them. Located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Thiruchendur town, Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district, Tamil Nadu, this temple is among the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in South India. It is also recognized as the fourth temple in Tamil Nadu to receive ISO certification, a reflection of its well-organized visitor facilities.

Temple Timings

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with darshan and puja conducted in two sessions:

• Morning: 5:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• Evening: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Special early-morning offerings such as tonsuring (head-shaving), gold offerings, and Milk Kavadi are typically accepted at the start of the morning session, so devotees planning these rituals should plan to arrive early.

History of Thiruchendur Murugan Temple

The temple’s recorded history dates back to at least 875 AD, though its origins are believed to be far older and are rooted in legend rather than formal documentation. Historical evidence suggests the temple existed during the Pallava period and was later renovated and expanded by the Pandya and Chera dynasties.

The temple’s history took a difficult turn in 1649, when the Portuguese occupied Tuticorin. Dutch soldiers subsequently looted the temple’s treasures despite efforts by local residents to protect them. According to local legend, Lord Murugan himself appeared in a dream to Vadamalaiyappa Pillaiyan, guiding the restoration of the temple in the years that followed.

Festivals Celebrated at the Temple

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple hosts two major Brahmotsavam festivals each year, each lasting 12 days:

• Masi Festival — celebrated in February–March
• Avani Festival — celebrated in August–September

A highlight of the Masi festival is the grand Theppa (Float) Festival, held on the 11th day, where thousands gather to watch the deity taken out in a decorated float.

During major festivals, the idols of Lord Murugan and his consorts, Valli and Deivanai, are brought out from their sanctums and placed in the temple’s open mandapam so devotees can view and offer prayers directly.

Another important observance is Vaikasi Visagam, held in May–June, which includes a special abhisheka (ritual bathing) for Lord Shanmuga followed by a night procession of the deity and his consorts.

Alongside the Masi and Avani festivals, the temple also observes the Skanda Sashti festival during October–November, commemorating Lord Murugan’s victory in the battle of Thiruchendur.

Ticket Costs and Darshan Options

• Free darshan is available to all devotees at no cost.
• Paid darshan tickets are priced at approximately ₹100 and ₹200, offering quicker access and, in some cases, a closer view near the Karpagraham (sanctum).
• Note that the Pancha Linga shrine may not be open for darshan on heavily crowded days.
• The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Annadanam (Free Meal) Seva

The temple runs a daily Annadanam program, serving free meals to no fewer than 100 people every day.

Devotees wishing to sponsor Annadanam have a few options:

• A one-time deposit of ₹1,50,000 funds one full day of Annadanam annually, in perpetuity, using the interest generated from the deposit.
• A direct one-day sponsorship for ₹10,000 provides meals for approximately 400 people.
