Basara Temple Timings, Saraswati Aksharabhyasam History

The Sri Gnana Saraswathi Temple in Basara, Telangana, is one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the divine embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, music, and learning. Nestled peacefully on the banks of the holy Godavari River, this ancient temple attracts thousands of devotees—especially students, parents, and those seeking blessings for education and intellectual growth.

Basara (also spelled Basar) is a serene village surrounded by lush gardens and natural beauty, offering a calm escape from city life. It’s about 210 km by road from Hyderabad (roughly a 4-hour drive) and well-connected by TSRTC buses and trains. The nearest railway station is Basar, just 2-3 km from the temple.

The Legend Behind the Temple

According to tradition, the great sage Veda Vyasa (the author of the Mahabharata) came to the peaceful forests of Dandakaranya after the Kurukshetra war. Seeking solitude, he meditated on the banks of the Godavari. Pleased with the tranquility of the place, Goddess Saraswati appeared before him, along with Lakshmi and Kali. She instructed Vyasa to install idols of the three goddesses here.

Using three handfuls of sand from the riverbank, Vyasa sculpted their forms. The site was first called Vyasapuri, later evolving into Vasara and eventually Basara (influenced by regional languages like Marathi). Some accounts credit the Rashtrakutas or a Karnataka king named Bijialudu with building or renovating the temple.

Unlike many grand temples with intricate carvings, Basara’s charm lies in its simplicity and profound spiritual energy. The presiding deity, Gnana Saraswathi Devi, sits gracefully holding a Veena, adorned with turmeric. Nearby shrines house Maha Lakshmi and Maha Kali, completing the divine trio.

Stepping into the sanctum sanctorum often brings an immediate sense of peace, brightness, and joy—many visitors describe it as an experience that words can hardly capture.
