Why is it Called “Bugga”?

In Telugu, the word “Bugga” means a water sprout or water bubble. The temple earned this unique name because a perennial underground stream flows continuously beneath the sanctum sanctorum, directly at the spot where the sacred Shiva Lingam is consecrated.

Rich History & Legends

1. Construction Era

Estimated to have been constructed between 1490 and 1509, the temple was built by Ramalinga Nayudu, a prominent chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire. Records reveal that a renowned master sculptor named Yellanchari was brought all the way from Benaras (Varanasi) to design and carve this architectural masterpiece.

2. The Sacred Legend

According to Hindu legend, the temple stands on the holy site where Sage Parasurama lived and meditated. Local folklore recounts how Ramalinga Nayudu noticed one of his cows regularly shedding its milk over an anthill. When a cowherd struck the anthill with an axe, Lord Shiva appeared in Ramalinga’s dream, revealing that he had been struck, and instructed him to build a temple at that exact location.

3. Historical Resilience

Over the centuries, the temple witnessed intense geopolitical shifts, enduring plunder by invading armies during medieval conflicts and standing resilient through the advent and culmination of British rule.

The temple’s design showcases a breathtaking fusion of Vijayanagara, Chalukyan, and Chola architectural styles.

• Intricate Wall Carvings: The outer walls feature detailed miniature carvings depicting scenes from the Shiva Purana, along with iconic episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

• The Grand Gopurams: The temple features major entrances on the South and West. The North Gopuram, though left unfinished, boasts some of the finest, most elaborate stone sculptures in South India.

• Mini Stone Chariot: Similar to the world-famous stone chariot in Hampi’s Vittala Temple, this complex features its own exquisitely crafted mini stone chariot.
