Thiruchendur Murugan Temple History:

History back to 875 AD. There is no real documentation for shown originality, but it is known that the Pallavasduring the same time. Pandyas and Cheras renovated this temple. Much later Portuguese occupies Tuticorin n 1649. The Dutch soldiers looted the treasures of the holy place while the locals made vain attempts to save it. Local Legend says how the lord himself showed up in the dreams of Vadamalaiyappa Pillaiyyan.

On Thiruchendur Murugan Temple mainly celebrated festivals are Masi and Avani. Brahmotsavam celebrated twice a year for 12 long days. Masi has held during February-march and Avani festival celebrated during August-September month. Theppa Floating also celebrated a very grand manner, floating takes place one 11th day of the Masi festival. People came in Hundreds and thousands to celebrate these festivals in the temple and have a view of the lord.

The diety of Murugan and his consorts Valli and deivanai are taken out of their respective sanctums and places in the vacant mantap for gathered devotees to view and offer prayers. Vaikasi Visagam special abhisheka for Lord Shanmuga is performed and during the night time. The procession of the lord and his consorts take place, Vaikasi Visagam ritual celebrated mostly on Month of May-June month.

By Air, Tuticorin airport is the nearest airport at 40km and the nearest train station is Thiruchendur railway station. The place can also be reached from other main cities like Madurai.
