Chenna kesava Temple is on the banks of the Gundlakamma River. This temple is built in Vijaynagara style of architecture. The huge Galigopuram of the temple is 135 feet tall. The Sri Mahavishnu in Chennakesava swami’s divine form and saw Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi with his consort. The lord Mahavishnu called the demon “kesi” as kesava because of the killing.
According to the legends, it is believed that Lord Vishnu killed Kesi, a demon at this place and Lord came to be called Kesava. The idol of Lord Vishnu is accompanied by his consort Goddess Lakshmi. The Chennakesava Swamy Temple was built during the reign of Sri KrishnSri Ladevaraya in the early 1500s A.D. You can see the temple even before you enter the town, it’s 135 feet Galigopuram is probably the tallest structure in the entire Prakasam district, a 500 year old skyscraper ! The walls of Sri Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple were constructed in 1425 AD and have 18 inscriptions. These inscriptions give an account of culture and lives of people during the reign of Krishnadeva Raya.
It is said the king gave away 355.14 acres to 14 surrounding villages just so that the people of villages would look after the temple. The temple has a 40-pillared Mandapam with the mystic carving of the Lord Sri Krishna, Lord Anjaneya, Lord Vighneswara and Goddess Sri Maha Lakshmi along with their Vahanas. The unique feature of this temple is that every year during the morning of 16th December to 14th January, the sun rays enter the sanctum sanctorum through a window and touch the feet of the deity.
This is a masterpiece of architectural wonder that shows the expertise of the artisans of Vijayanagar Dynasty. This makes the deity’s feet glow for 20 minutes. During this phenomenon, thousands of devotees visit the temple to catch a glimpse of this spectacular sight. There is also a magnificent Kalyana Mandapam which has 6 musical pillars that produce 7 musical notes of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni in its correct Aarohana and Avarohana, when gently tapped with fingers.
