The story of Mopidevi goes back to a visit by four immortal Deva Rishis — Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatkumara, and Sanatsujata — to Mount Kailas, the abode of Lord Shiva. Known for their deep devotion and detachment from worldly life, these sages always appeared in the form of five-year-old boys and remained unclothed, having risen above bodily awareness entirely.

When the sages arrived at Kailas, Goddess Sachi Devi, Swaha Devi, Saraswathi, and Lakshmi were also present. Young Lord Subrahmanyeswara, seated in his mother Goddess Parvathi’s lap, found the contrast between the richly adorned goddesses and the unclothed sages amusing and laughed innocently. Goddess Parvathi scolded him for this disrespect.

Realizing his mistake, Lord Subrahmanyeswara sought his mother’s permission to do penance and atone for it. He performed this penance in the disguise of a snake, and the place where he completed it came to be known as Mopidevi.
