TTD to Build Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Guwahati

In a monumental step for spiritual tourism and the propagation of Sanatana Dharma in Northeast India, the Assam Government has officially approved the allocation of 25 acres of land in Guwahati for the construction of the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Divya Kshetram.

This decision marks a significant upgrade from the previously proposed 10.8 acres, ensuring that the “Lord of the Seven Hills” will have a majestic presence in the gateway to the Northeast.

The Road to a Spiritual Hub: How the Decision Evolved

Initially, the Assam Government had consented to allotting 10.8 acres in the Kamrup metropolitan district. However, concerns were raised regarding the proximity to an existing Sri Balaji temple in Garchuk. To avoid any adverse impact on local administrative interests, the Assam Government initially suggested moving the project to either Silchar or Dibrugarh.

The breakthrough came through high-level diplomatic correspondence between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Vision of “One State, One Temple”

The AP Chief Minister emphasized that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is on a mission to establish at least one temple in every State and Union Territory of India. Highlighting that Guwahati serves as the vital hub for the entire Northeast, Sri Chandrababu Naidu advocated for a larger plot of 25 acres—matching the scale of the TTD temple in Andhra Pradesh’s new capital, Amaravati.

“Guwahati is an important hub for the entire Northeast. I recommend increasing the land to 25 acres to establish a Divyakshetram along with pilgrim amenities and regular Annadanam (sacred food distribution).” — Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu, CM of Andhra Pradesh

Key Highlights of the Project

The development of this Divya Kshetram is expected to transform the spiritual landscape of Assam. Key features include:

  • Expanded Land Area: Increased from 10.8 acres to a sprawling 25 acres in Guwahati.

  • Comprehensive Amenities: The site will house not just the main temple, but also various pilgrim amenities to accommodate thousands of devotees.

  • Annadanam: Following the sacred tradition of Tirumala, the temple will offer regular free meals (Annadanam) to pilgrims.

  • Financial Collaboration: The Assam Government has agreed in-principle to provide financial support for the development and grounding of various activities at the site.

  • Strategic Location: By staying in Guwahati rather than moving to smaller cities, the temple remains accessible to all eight Northeastern states.

Strengthening Sanatana Dharma

TTD Chairman Sri BR Naidu extended his heartfelt gratitude to both Chief Ministers for resolving the matter amicably. He reassured the public that the TTD Trust Board will fast-track the legal and administrative formalities to initiate construction.

This project is more than just a temple; it is a cultural bridge between South and Northeast India. It brings the grace of Lord Venkateswara closer to millions of devotees who may find it difficult to travel to Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh.

The establishment of the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Divya Kshetram in Guwahati is set to become a beacon of peace, spirituality, and community service, further enriching the “spiritual aura” of Assam.

Why This Matters for Guwahati

  1. Religious Tourism: A TTD-managed temple is a major draw for tourists and devotees nationwide.

  2. Infrastructure Growth: Large-scale religious projects often lead to better roads and local facilities.

  3. Cultural Exchange: It fosters a deeper connection between the Vedic traditions of the South and the rich heritage of the Northeast.
